Understanding lung cancer

Understand lung cancer and ask informed questions

Learn about common types, risk factors and changes that need medical assessment. Start with reliable information.

Lung cancer has different types

The main types are non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. The specific type, extent of disease and your overall health all influence subsequent care. Similar names do not mean that everyone needs the same tests or treatment.

Focus on risks you can change

Smoking is a major risk factor for lung cancer. Secondhand smoke, air pollution and some occupational exposures are also associated with risk. Not smoking, quitting smoking, reducing secondhand smoke exposure and following workplace protection measures are steps you can take for your health.

Tell your doctor about changes in your health

A persistent cough, coughing up blood, chest pain, breathlessness or unexplained weight loss should be medically assessed. These symptoms alone cannot establish a lung cancer diagnosis. Recording when they began and how they change can help your conversation with your doctor.
